The expected nomination of Martti Ahtisaari, a former Finnish president, as UN mediator in talks about Kosovo's future has been delayed, Austria Presse Agentur (APA), an Austrian news agency, reported Wednesday.
It quoted a Russian diplomat as saying in New York that Russia wanted a "clearer mandate" for the mediator, something only the UN Security Council can do.
Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, had been expected to name Mr Ahtisaari on Thursday or Friday. |

Belgrade, 24 October, BETA: Serbian President Boris Tadic said this evening that Serbia faces a period of hard and complex talks on the future status of "Kosovo-Metohija".
In a statement to the Beta news agency, Tadic said that the UN Security Council's decision to open talks on Kosovo-Metohija's status was an expected one.
"The scope for defending our interests has been narrowed down by a legacy of difficult consequences of the rule of Slobodan Milosevic and the Serbian Radical Party," the Serbian president said.
"We will protect our legitimate national and state interests with the force of arguments and with a mutually agreed plan and strategy," Tadic stressed.
