Mitrovicë, Kosovë, 11 December 2007 – Less than two weeks after promising that no unilateral moves will be made, Serbia went ahead and opened a “Serbian Government Office” in the northern part of Mitrovica.  “Serbia is defending her territory, the right of its people to live within her borders, and international law,” said the Slobodan Samardžić, Serbian “Minister for Kosovo” during the opening speech.

UNMIK deputy chief Steven Schook said that the opening was illegal and unacceptable for UNMIK.  He stated that this move was a breach of UN Security Council Resolution 1244. Under UNSC resolution 1244, the only authority that could authorize such a move is the UN Mission in Kosova (UNMIK).

The UNMIK deputy chief also added that the move broke the agreement Belgrade had made with the Contact Group Troika during the status negotiations.
