Belgrade, 8 October 2006 (KN) - With statements that the decision on Kosovo's future may be postponed until after Serbian elections, Ahtisaari and Solana have caused a big headache to Serbia's Koštunica. Reason for the headache is Kostunica's pre-election campaign, which mainly consisted of criticisms of International Community's refusal to postpone the decision on Kosovo's status.

This explains the harsh reaction of Koštunica when he learned about Ahtisaari's statement. Koštunica said that "Ahtisaari does not have the mandate to tell a country when to hold its elections". His's remarks were considered inappropriate by Miodrag Radojević from the Institute For Political Studies as well. Radojević said that Koštunica's harsh reaction was a result of the spoiled relations between Serbia and the International Community.

"Instead of being a mediator, by saying this Ahtisari became a judge as well, therefore, while taking that in consideration Koštunica reacted fast and emotionally. It is possible that this statement surprised him and spoiled the plans to criticize Ahtisaari in his elections campaign. On the other hand, postponmnent of the decision is convenient for Ahtisaari as well since he will not be accused of assisting Serb radicals come to power" Radojević continued.

The editor of the "New Serbian Thought", Đorđe Vukadinović said that it is possible that the risk of the radicals coming to power affected the consideration of the postponement.

"Ahtisaari's statement obviously shows that someone in the international community cares if the elections are held in Serbia before it receives the most likely bad news about Kosovo", Vukadinović said.

Leader of the Serbian Radical Party Tomislav Nikolić said that he is not sure what Ahtisaari said and not sure why is Koštunica attacking him.

"I am not sure if he (Ahtisaari) is speaking the truth, but I think he is being honest, because clearly Serbia has no government now, and you can't blame someone when they say that a country without government needs elections".
