Prishtinë, 25 October 2006 - KosovoNews - Koha Ditore writes that Albania has demanded China vote for Kosovo’s independence. During a telephone conversation, Albanian Foreign Minister, Besnik Mustafaj, had with his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing, he demanded that “China, as a permanent Security Council member, should contribute to peace and stability in the Balkan region by supporting a stable and long term solution in accordance with the will of the absolute majority of Kosovo population.”

During the telephone conversation, Mustafaj expressed himself that “the Government of Albania considers Kosovo as a unique case and as an unprecedented one.”

According to the newspaper, Interior Ministry’s Press Office announced that during this conversation Mustafaj appreciated the high level of economic relations with China and stressed that this is now the moment to move to another phase in Chinese investments in Albania. “We want Albania to be China’s main partner in the region,” said Mustafaj.

The Republic of China (ROC) was one of the founding members of the United Nations and a permanent member of the Security Council from its creation in 1945. In 1949, the Communist Party of China seized power on the mainland and declared the People's Republic of China (PRC), claiming to have replaced the ROC as the sole legitimate government of China. The ROC government withdrew to Taiwan, where it has continued to rule ever since.

From the 1960s onwards, nations friendly to the PRC, led by Albania, moved an annual resolution in the General Assembly to transfer China's seat at the UN from the ROC to the PRC.

On October 25, 1971, Resolution 2758 was passed by the General Assembly, withdrawing recognition of the ROC as the legitimate government of China, and recognising the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China.
